“Handing over source code [would] mean that the Chinese government will know exactly how an Apple software works,” said Percy Alpha, a pseudonymous founder of the anti-censorship group GreatFire.org.
Inside knowledge would make it much easier for the Chinese government to find bugs and vulnerabilities in Apple’s products, he said, and “the government can then exploit such vulnerabilities to hack iPhone or MacBooks.”
Some thoughts here
Foreign car makers produce their models in China using inferior parts and materials, with technologies at least one generation behind. Effectively prevents the chinese from stealing their tech. Why not apple do the same in china? Just give them a crappy version of iOS with all security features removed to please the chinese govt
That's just what the chinese govt want. They want to tap people's message, track down dissidents, prevent you from watching youtube and using google services, or maybe using your phone's sensors silently. Of course apple should make a special iOS for the chinese or all other tyranny regimes if they want to make money. Otherwise the whole world is at risk if you provide chinese govt the backdoor.
