I'm a fan of portable 2.5-inch hdd. I've two Buffalo 500GB (over 4 yrs), two transcend 2TB (25A3 and 25H3) and a very ancient HGST 160GB (over 6 yrs). We know that all or most of the newer models are using embedded USB bridge chipset (cut cost ...). Btw, my portable HDDs are for backup purpose.
Having googled and discussed with computer center sales people (of different shops), it seems WD my passport is one of the weakest (fragile and prone to failure) portable hdds in the market.
As per my experience, Transcend and Buffalo are far more reliable than WD.
ps. it seems Toshiba portable hdd is also ... a bit fragile
AFAIK only Western DICKgital makes ext HDDs with embedded USB bridge controller chipse ... would stick to (Scorpio) Blue + Transcend enclosure 25S3... works just great
