i have a s95 for my own use, and i think using Auto will do everything fine! so you can ask your parents to use auto for all of the shootings, then it is no longer complicated!

Not bad, but if set to auto, it will set the ISO high in night, so there may be some noise, otherwise i think it is fine!

any easy way for taking good night shots?   (people in front of a night scene)

In auto mode, the camera itself should be able to detect the best scene mode for your subject, and the flash should be deployed when necessary. The resulted photo might be not as good, but for people who don't know how to operate the camera, it would be the best solution.
