I have the older 2.8-4. It is acatually a pretty good lens. Its my walk around lens when I'm not using the 17-35.
The 2.8 has a bit more complicated distortion at 24mm than the VR. The VR has barrel distortion which is easier to correct with software. Sharpness of both is good at f5.6 and very good at f8-f11. With D610 I think its sharpness should not be a problem. (The edge sharpness is a problem with my D800e at wide open, its less of an issue with my D4)
The 24-120 VR is, in my opinion, a better lens - but then its a lot more expensive.

hi , have you have any experience of this lens on D800e/810? I use A7r and dont mind manual focus. but i worry it might not be sharp enough to take advatange of the sensor
(if i remember correct the 24-85 2.8 was one of the last nikon lens that use lead production which later was banned due to regulation. so the colour is quite different to newer G lens? [in a nice way] )
