I would like to know because I want to use the North America AWS frequency band (i.e. uplink band 1700, downlink band 2100). It seems the mainland version would support but not the HK version.
It is also obvious from the specification pages on their respective websites that it shows HK version supports fewer bands comparing to the mainland version. Namely the B4 1700Mhz band is not supported. (That means the 1700Mhz LTE in Japan is not supported too?)
Called 妖米 customer service, they were not able to help to clarify as I expected because of lack of technical know how. Vaguely implying the two phones are different. However, both versions use the same Qualcomm snapdragon 650 chip. How can they be different in hardware and in supporting different frequency bands?

To my understanding. The hardware is exactly the SAME. It might be the radio different, and it is a software any flashable. It has a very very very high chance that you can get full band support like in China after you flashed with China MIUI ROM.
However, if you know how to check the band information on the device, I can help you with it as I have flashed China ROM and now AOSP.

I always prefer the hk version over mainland because it comes with a clean rom with google framework. I just do not trust the stability of those self install google framework on top of mainland rom plus all those bundled garbage apps that come with it.
I am concerned with the hardware only as I am planning to replace MIUI with other third party rom at last. Who would trust the rom made in communist china? Not only in terms of privacy but also in terms of quality control and user experience.
It is standard procedure that you buy mainland brand smartphone just for the cheap hardware and replace the rom of your choice.
