Hi all,
thinking of setup a NAS to storage photos,
maybe 916+ with 4 3TB WDRed , running SHR,
on their website,it said 用於資料保護:3TB , 可用空間:9TB.
what does it mean? does it means SHR will use 9TB space ? 3TB is free for other usage?
is it also meaning Cloud Station Backup will use 9TB , then can i use 3TB for timemachine?

即係代表你4隻3TB放埋一齊, 實際只得9TB可用, 3TB會redundancy用途而唔用得
響呢9TB入面, 你可以再自行決定time machine / cloud station backup / shared folder等點用, 總共加埋唔可以超過9TB data, 你當佢變成一隻9TB HDD咁用就得

for example ,this mean i can create a 5TB proportion inside the 9TB? and then use the remaining 4TB as normal file storage ?
and when storing file, shall i just drag them into the system or use DSM?

冇呢個concept, 係你放幾多data先用幾多, 而唔係一早食哂幾TB位
另外, 你知唔知Cloud Station Backup有咩用? Cloud Station Backup係指由一台Synology NAS backup去另一台Synology NAS喎
如果你做本機backup, 應該用Hyper Backup, 但係唔建議你將同一volume又做data又做backup
因為一炒volume就連backup都炒埋, 根本冇用

um... actually i am still quite confusing even i read so many about NAS.
how about i talk out my case first?
Basically , im using 3TB iMac, and had been using a 3tb timecapsule( i know i am 7,please dont laugh). but the hdd inside the timecapsule just dead a few days ago. so im looking for a much safer,bigger space to storage my photos beside burning a bluray.
And here are the problem im facing and want to solve:
1.move my very old file from iMac to some safe space to free my imac HDD space
And read so many about NAS and here are what i concluded:
1.bigger stroage space
2.i may use RAID5 , because its much safer
am i correct? or should i just simply buy an 3TB external hard disk?

如果本身3TB work的話, 冇理由8TB唔work
