Review - First Choice Microfiber Chenille Wash Mitt
(I think First Choice 首選牌 is a sub-brand of Wellcome supermarket)

Introduction:
Once again thanks Corey for providing the review format.  It is autumn now and is time for some car detailing!  Let's do this!

Washing is the most important step in car care.  Why?  Because it is THE STEP for both waxing and maintenance.  You cannot wax a dirty car, and if your washing is bad, you will damage your detailer's effort.  In addition, most of the damage is done to paint during the wash stage.  So it is important to find a wash tool that doesnt scratch your 2nd most expensive investment in your life.

There are a few materials commonly used for car washing:
Cotton > Wool > Sponge > Microfiber
There is no material that can claim the best.  Each have their pros and cons.  It is a matter of personal taste about which one you pick.

Chenille, the French word for Caterpillar ("毛毛蟲").  When micro fiber is woven into a thick caterpillar-like (or noodle as some may call it), we get a microfiber chenille mitt with super huge surface area for cleaning.  Dirt can be held within the gap between the chenille strands.  This would result in a scratch free wash tool that is ideal for washing delicate surfaces.

A couple of years ago, I was shopping in Wellcome supermarket.  In the home cleaning aisle this mitt caught my eyes.  After checking the mitt I bought 6 of them in 3 different colors.  When I check out the lady was looking me like I am an alien from another planet but whatever.

Claim:
It claims nothing other than money back guarentee.  You dont need them to refund you anything.

Details:
1. Packaging: No packaging.  It just hang itself on the shelf and collect dust.
2. Directions: No directions given.  Just use it whichever way you want.
3. Consistency: Not Applicable.
4. Color: Green, yellow or orange.  Color does not affect the texture though.
5. Scent: disgusting scent of dirty fabric when you get it from Wellcome.
6. Price: VERY CHEAP.  So cheap I dont remember.  Should be less than HKD$20!
7. Cost: $0.1 / use??
8. Manufacturer: Wellcome
9. Made in: China

Additional products used:
1. 2 generic water buckets

Yes I used 1 piece of Water Magnet to dry 2 cars that have not been waxed for over a year.  There is no need to wring out the towel.

Environmental Conditions:
28*C, 80% RH
Cars: 2 cars with trashed paint, a lot of bird bombs and caked on dirt.
Last wax section: March 2011 with Sonax Nano 1 Paint Sealant.

Lets see some photos and we will return with pros, cons and conclusion afterwards.

For those who doubt about the mitt, I rubbed a CD against the mitt.  If this mitt is safe for CD, this mitt is safe to use on your car!  If you scratch your car with this mitt, either there is something wrong with your washing technique, or your car is softer than a plastic optical disc.


Take the disc under the sun to check for scratches.  No visible scratches.  It actually washed off my finger print with no effort.


A lot of people miss the licence plate area when they wash car...


And the fuel area...  Can you see the little black hole at the bottom?  It is a small water "sewage pipe".


I hate yellow wheels and brown tires, but I hate to clean them too!


Alright look better now, but still not the best...  I forget to bring my wheel cleaning tools today!


Mitt on paint.  Please see Cons -1 regarding the mitt colar.


Wash mitt easily rinse clean after washing 2 extremely dirty cars.  See the water become BLACK just for paint!?!?  (Wheel got its own bucket.)


Pros:
+1. Scratch free wash for the most delicate surfaces thanks to ample room for holding dirt.
+2. Rinse clean even after I wipe my engine with it.
+3. Good at cleaning.
+4. Long lasting if you take good care of it.  I am still using my first pair of mitts.
+5. CHEAP!  It is 1/5 the price of Meguiar's MF wash mitt, and works better!!!


Cons:
-1. The colar is sharp and stiff it may scratch the paint.  Be extra careful or cut it away.
-2. Does not hold as much soap water as other type of mitts, but this is the nature of chenille mitts.
-3. The inner lining seems to break after 1 use, but it doesnt affect the function of mitt.

Conclusion:
This is a very nice car wash mitt.  It cleans well, it is non-scratching, does not hold stain like other wash media, and most importantly it is readily available in HK at a super cheap price.  Cant ask for more!  I have already stock up on those mitts.  What are you waiting for?

nice review! i have been thinking of using this to wash my car but always hesitated it may cause scratches on the paints. (mainly because of the cheap price!!!)
now i can buy few and use them with no worries. thanks!!!

btw, i think use this mitt to clean wheels is more effective with brushes? because my wheels are easy to get dirty and the brush is not very effective on cleaning as the wheel hv 8-10 columns...

nice review, we have the same kind of mitt here too, the one I am using is green color. I never thought of testing it for potential scratches before using it, I assumed it was scratch free

So I always do a small test before using if it is my first time.
