I've a HTPC (pretty small) running at 24/7 with event scheduler (Windows app) being set to backup NAS files on daily basis (at multiple interval, using Free File Sync mirror mode with verify on) ... to external HDDs in NTFS file format. Seriously, for backup media, I will only use NTFS!

Whatever device you are backing up your data from, you need it to be turned on in the first place. If backing up from PC to External Hard Drives, you need the PC to be on. It is fine if OP only intend to backup his data from smartphones then a NAS like the WD MyCloud would work; alternatively plugging an external HDD to your home router can serve the same function.
Now regarding PC1668's case, you could have used Hyper Backup (if using Synology NAS) with the same effect, it supports NTFS formatted external HDD; that's what I am using to backup my DSM, one less device needed to be kept on unless it is destinated to be running 24/7 anyway.
