[Windows 10] Microsoft is silently preparing your PC for Windows 10

MICROSOFT is wasting no time in preparing for the arrival of its forthcoming bouncing baby operating system Windows 10.

A new optional update with the unremarkable name of KB3035583, and the equally unremarkable description - "This update enables additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications when new updates are available to the user" - has arrived in Windows Update for users of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.

Windows 8 users don't get to join the party as the original iteration is considered as end of life since the advent of the free Windows 8.1 upgrade.

In fact, those for whom deconstructing Microsoft's efforts is a full-time hobby have discovered that the update is actually a notifier and installer for the Windows 10 update, thus allowing for the nagging to upgrade to begin as soon as the new OS becomes commercially available.

This acts as proof positive that Microsoft will be on a serious charm offensive over the coming weeks and months as it attempts to win over the public to the fragmentation-killing new OS, and that unless you go out of your way to avoid this update you are almost certainly going to get bombarded with nag screens inviting you to embrace change from Day One.

If you are the sort of person who instinctively downloads every update possible, look for a new folder in your computer called GWX. It includes a service running constantly in the background, waiting to pounce as soon as the Windows 10 servers are live.

Microsoft is putting a huge amount of faith in this version of Windows after slow take up of predecessor Windows 8 (the company inexplicably opted to skip Windows 9) which is still languishing at around 15 percent market share.

Windows 7, by comparison, continues to gain users and has just under 60 percent.
