It's a complicated question could not be answered by a few words just because there are many form factors could be the reason.
The changes mostly by getting a brand new soundcard with high-end DAC (digital to analogue, dedicated for decoding the digital source) chipsets, capacitors, op-amp (dedicated for enlarging the signal).
For a diehard fan, they must make the components split from the personal computer which generates lot of noises. (CPU, MB, RAM are having electric currents which mixing the track of DAC->3.5 head jack)
LPS, DAC, Pre-amp, Power-amp, power cord, plug, connectors, speakers, positions of speakers etc. (may confusing you)
In short, I recommend you go for a soundcard if you wanna know about the better sound. (Depends on your budget)
