Actually, how can I know if mine are affected or not?  I visited the webpage as #2 posted.  However, what else should I input to the fields?

The entire class of 7200.11 and ES.2 drives are effected.
Anyways I am going to send a request for firmware update...

Check your Hard Drive model, do a search to see if it is 7200.11 or not. If it is, check if it is using the SD15 version of firmware.  If both conditions are met, then your drive is very likely to be affected... If you can check the label and it says "Made in Thailand" then you better backup ASAP since it seems most of the reported dead drives are from Thailand.

Apart from physically check the harddisk, is there any software could provide those information for me?
I tried Seatools but not luck.

Welcome, Seagate hard drive owners.  A number of Seagate hard drives from the following families may fail when the host system is powered on:

Barracuda 7200.11
DiamondMax 22
Barracuda ES.2 SATA
SV35

Once a drive has failed, the data is inaccessible to users.  Seagate has isolated this issue to a firmware bug affecting drives from these families manufactured through December 2008. Please use the following tools and instructions to determine if you have one of the affected products.  If you do, we recommend that you update the firmware on the disk drive.

It said *ALL* drives manufactured through Dec 2008. I don't think those new (supposedly bug fixed) drives made in Jan 2009 have hit the market yet.

Seagate drives (at least the spinning motor) is pretty quiet, and the disk spinning speed is constant otherwise it can't read any data at all, so there is no chance you could hear its sound and later wind down when the system boot up normally.  Are you sure it is not from your CPU fan / display card fan / system fan instead?  I would guess: you have a separate display card; and it is your display card fan running at full speed causing that sound during the unsuccessful boot.

Though I think it would be more appropriate if you could post the symptom to relevant board instead of discussing here.

Oh! I still cannot get the answer yet.   Mine are ST31000333AS and ST3250823A. So, do I need an firmware update?
Actually, the problem is not found yet.  But, who knows it will come.:funk:
