Samsung builds AMOLED displays for both itself and its competitors, making recent shortages a potential conflict of interest, as the company could have prioritized its own devices like the Galaxy S over such other popular models as HTC’s Droid Incredible. Instead, claims Lee, all customers — including itself — are given equal access to the limited number of components; Samsung reportedly made its own employees wait on Galaxies so that more would be available for the general public.

Samsung Mobile Display provides screens for a number of different companies including Samsung Electronics. The shortages in screens have reportedly affected all phone makers equally with Samsung Electronics getting no preferential treatment for screens for devices like the Galaxy S.

But Lee said that Samsung Electronics' flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S, doesn't get priority over other customers, and that the shortage has affected everyone equally

But once the HTC Desire was welcomed by global consumers and telecom operators at the time, Samsung "strategically declined" to supply its AMOLED displays to the smartphone maker, Tong said at a local forum on mobile broadband.
"We found that key component supply can be used as a competitive weapon," he said.

But what an interesting coincidence. While HTC is scrambling, and failing to meet the demand, loosing frustrated customers, Samsung is able to ramp up the production of it’s own direct Android 2.1 competitor – Galaxy S. And launch it in multiple countries, with multiple operators, almost at once. Without any supply issues at all…

Samsung, the world’s No. 2 handset maker, is to blame for the tight supply of AM-OLED displays, analysts said. The Korean company is aggressively pushing for sales of its smartphone Galaxy S equipped with AM-OLED displays, gobbling up the component supply. Samsung Mobile Display, a joint venture of Samsung Electronics and Samsung SDI, controls 98 percent of the global AM-OLED display market.
“For Samsung Mobile Display, there may be not enough AM-OLED displays to supply to companies other than its affiliate Samsung Electronics,” Kim Sung-in, an analyst at Kiwoom Securities, said.
