If you really want to take this topic seriously, Oracle has no point to purchase AMD at all, as they have their own enterprise processor business which executes quite well in terms of designs. Neither Apple, Intel, IBM, Nvidia or any other companies will acquire AMD for a similar reason with regard to their own battlefields. Microsoft might have a chance, but as far as I heard, they are more likely to build on their own, and it is quite reasonable if we are talking about low-power ARMv8 solutions. Neither they have an economies of scale internally to support such a huge, diversified division just for their entertainment, PC and server products, while they would f**k all their external partners if they acquire such a semiconductor company. You can see the result in the handheld space.
So eventually, it is more likely that AMD will still live as is. In parallel to their commodity chips, the new semi-custom business model, aka the "Give me your specification and RTL, and I will give you the chip" model, probably works, as RTL is cheap but playing with foundry is expensive. |
