I'm using seagate backup plus 4tb 2.5" SMR hdd (STDR4000300). The performance is mostly normal (similar to PMR). Due to its SMR nature, after extensive file add/change/delete activities, the read/write speed drops (a bit). A simple quick format will refresh the hdd to its original level of performance. All in all, SMR hdd is still okay as long as we are using it for backup purpose.

"All the new BarraCuda 2.5" HDDs feature 128 MB of DRAM cache as well as multi-tier caching (MTC) technology, which is designed to hide peculiarities of SMR."
