Seriously, it is meaningless to use a formula... it just "complicate" things up. It is very easy to understand: air is lighter than any cooling fluid, therefore if you position the pump upside down fluid will just pass through the top part of the impeller and leave you nothing in between the bottom part of the rotor and stator, which leads to overheat. And again, you will need fluid to fill in the gaps between the rotor, stator and the "stationary ball bearing" to avoid any abrasion to these components while the pump is operating.
if you still dont understand what the situation looks like i sugguest you to take a look at the pic posted by k2t4 early on on page 6.
The pump will still be able to spin without fluid even the pump is upside down, however you are taking the risk of damaging the pump.
I'm posting here to assist those who are willing to take my advise while I try my best to provide the most precise explaination as i can. Furthermore, I have NO intention to offense any individual members here, However please do not misleading the others while you are giving a wrong interpretation.
If you insist to place the pump upside down is all fine for me. Good Luck
p.s. sorry for my bad grammar
Edit: fixing my bad grammar
