If your relatively stable old PC is not that 'high power', I think it's ok to use it as a ftp server. Of course you need to ensure the operating system temperature of various components (cpu, mb, video card, etc) are within normal range. I've been using a low-end dual core mini case PC as a ftp server for years without any problem.
NAS is good (for many other purposes) but as you mentioned, it's expensive (the NAS+HDD). If your main purpose is just for a very simple ftp server, utilizing existing resource to fulfil the requirement is not a bad idea. |
