ATA errors are the result of sending ATA commands to the drives and having them come back with an error; these can be result of cabling (RF interference, result of cable slicing, etc) and media errors, where the drive is just unable to read the required SECTOR due to an error in physical medium (these are bad). As a result of the error in medium, you should see the SMART values change. But not all ATA errors will generate a SMART error. So, it's pretty hard to say without knowing exactly what the ATA error is and doing some googling.
