Your interpretation is correct.

With the same cost,

for long distance such as studio / outdoor, active speaker performs better. It is because passive speaker uses line power which has big power and signal loss over distance. Also, active speaker has built-in amp which doesn't need matching.

for short distance such as home, standalone amp with passive speaker is preferred. Standalone amp has good space for versatile circuits (power supply, filters, equalizer, volume control). Moreover, power loss is insignificant for short distance.

About the speaker driver unit, there is no design difference between active and passive speakers.

樓上位ching一向都好岐視有源喇叭，欲加之罪何患無辭

即係喇叭本體設計沒有多大分別,只是看份 AMP 放在那裏可帶來較多優點。

Many years ago, my customer (a very famous German studio audio brand) told me that most world best speakers are active speakers. I had to agree with him.
