I think its just ATI/NV being safe.

As most people use 'NO NAME' PSU which says 550w and in fact its even weaker than some 400w...

Thats why sometimes its inflated requirement.

But to be honest.  If you are playing with SLI and trying to get the cheapest PSU possible.
