Clean installing Windows 7 upgrade version without Vista/XP
This is a guide to clean install Windows 7 upgrade version on a computer without an older version of Windows on it. It is the same trick that people have been using to clean install Vista upgrade version, and this trick still works for Windows 7. I have personally tested it and it worked on my 64-bit English version Windows 7 Professional Upgrade.
Step 1: Boot up your computer with your Windows 7 DVD and install it as if you are installing a full version Windows 7. You don't need to get a full version DVD, upgrade version and full version share the same DVD, only their CD-Keys differ. At the end of the installation, you will be asked to enter the CD-Key. Do NOT enter the CD-Key, and you will be told that you can evaluate Windows 7 for 30 days.
Step 2: Log into your newly installed Windows 7, insert the DVD and run the setup within Windows 7 again. You will be asked to choose between "upgrade" and "custom install", it doesn't matter.
It matters for people running Vista who are really upgrading. "Upgrade" means in place upgrade, which preserve the installed programs and data on Vista. "Custom install" means clean install, the installation procedure will put all the Vista related stuff into a separate folder called "windows.old" and then install Windows 7. Since we are upgrading to Windows 7 from a newly installed Windows 7, it doesn't matter. There is nothing to "upgrade" since all the files to be installed are the same as those installed, the setup will just replace the installed files with the same one. If you choose "custom install", remember to delete the "windows.old" folder afterwards.
Step 3: At the end of the 2nd installation, you will be asked to enter the CD-Key again. This time enter your upgrade version CD-Key and activate. Done.
